There you were, getting ready to take your boat out again for another great day out on the water, but something is missing, the music. Yea, you can lug the old boom box out with you again, but is that what you really want to listen to all day? I know, you’ve been afraid the put a regular car stereo system in your boat because you were afraid it would get ruined by the water and other elements. Well your problem has been solved – just purchase Marine quality audio components!
What are Marine Quality audio components?
Marine Quality audio components are made to take the outside elements, UV rays, water, salt and fog. Marine units use high quality, non corrosive materials not needed in a traditional car stereo such as stainless steel, gold plating, coated circuit boards, coated speakers cones, baskets and terminals. They have sealed chassis so water cannot get in. Most are not only water proof, but water tight.
What features do I look for when purchasing a Marine system?
1. Power – Since you are not going to be listening to your system in your car with the widows up, you will need more power for your marine system than you would for your car to get the same listening level.
2. Use marine rated components to ensure your electronics will be protected from the elements.
3. A waterproof, wired remote that allows you to install the stereo in a watertight place and allows you to control it from outside. With some brands, you can add multiple remotes to give you control from various parts of your boat.
4. Auxiliary input, Ipod ready or Satellite Radio ready – This allows you to add additional content sources to your system for hours of enjoyment while on the water, without lugging all of your CD’s with you.
What kind of Marine audio equipment is available?
CD/MP3/DVD decks
Amplifiers
Subwoofers
Speakers
Wireless waterproof remotes that float
Wired watertight remotes
Marine antennas/kits for satellite radio
Can’t I just use regular car audio components in my boat?
Well the answer is “yes” and “no”. If you want to use a regular car stereo in your boat, you need to purchase an additional water proof cover for it, install it in a watertight area or mount it inside your boats cabin where the elements cannot get to it. Same with the amplifier. Speakers made with poly or treated cones can be used, but they do not have treated connectors and baskets, so be sure you mount them in a water tight compartment. Keep in mind, even the best car audio components are made for the relatively safe, dry environment of the car, not the elements they will see when in a boat, so they will not last as long. So if you choose to use them, it is just a question of the quality of the installation and the longevity you are looking for out of the components you are purchasing.
If you have questions on whether a component you are interest in is ok for Marine use or what more information on Marine Audio, please feel free to call or email one of our Mobile Electronic Specialist, they will be happy to help you out.
