Is there anything worse than listening to the ballgame in your car with all of that static? Almost as bad if the fidelity of today’s standard FM broadcasts. It’s no wonder you spend most of your time listening to CD’s or your MP3 instead of the radio. Well, HD radio is about to change that.
What is HD Radio? – HD radio is the most significant advancement is radio broadcasting since FM stereo more than 50 years ago. HD radio broadcasts their signals digitally, which give you a sonically superior signal and more programming to the old analog signal, and it is free, no subscription required. You just need an HD radio tuner.
How does HD Radio work? – When an HD Radio station broadcasts its signal, it bundles a digital and analog signal together. The digital signal can carry not only the music, but text data such as song and artist plus other data such as traffic and stock info. If you have an HD receiver, you will get the digital broadcast. If you have a standard AM/FM radio, you will get the analog broadcast.
What are some of the advantages of HD Radio? – Because the signal is broadcast digitally, some of the advantages are:
FM stations now have CD quality sound
AM stations now have FM quality sound
Crystal clear receptions with no audio distortion
More stations thru HD2 multicasting
More genres of music
More detailed news
More talk and in depth interviews
More complete sets and entire albums
Text info such as traffic and stock updates
Artist and song ID’s
No subscription fee
What is HD2 Multicasting? – Since the HD Radio signal is digital, two or more stations can be broadcast at the same time. Example – KLOS in Los Angeles broadcasts two HD Radio stations. 95.5 and 95.5-2. 95.5 is an AOR [album oriented rock] station and 95.5-2 is a fusion Hispanic and Anglo rock station. So by switching to HD technology, they have greater capacity to broadcast. It you had an analog radio, you would only be able to hear the AOR station. With an HD radio tuner, you can now get both stations.
